39 producers in India’s steel industry have already applied for certification in accordance with the green steel taxonomy, according to Rediff.
According to State Minister for Steel Bhupathi Raju Srinivas Varma, such certificates will be issued to plants that meet the emission intensity level in accordance with the taxonomy introduced in the country.
He noted that the National Institute of Secondary Steel Technology (NISST) is the nodal agency for measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV).
In December 2024, the Indian government announced a formula for defining green steel, which ranks such products into three categories based on the amount of carbon dioxide emitted during the production process. Steel produced with CO2 emissions of less than 2.2 tons per ton of rolled product will be classified as three-star green, and steel with emissions below 1.6 tons per ton of alloy will be classified as five-star.
As GMK Center reported earlier, the country’s steel ministry published the green steel taxonomy in March 2025, and it will come into effect in the 2026/2027 fiscal year. The rating criteria will be reviewed every three years. The Energy Efficiency Bureau (BEE) has been tasked with creating and maintaining a state register of green steel based on the conclusions of the NISST.
The authorities intend to give preference to such steel within the framework of the green public procurement policy. This is an important incentive given the significant role of the state in total steel consumption — according to the Ministry of Steel, the volume of state orders for steel products will increase to 67–73 million tons by 2030/2031.
